From Sociology Scholar to Youth Advocate

Some people face more challenges than others simply because of where they are born. I first noticed this when I was a child, seeing people from different backgrounds being excluded from opportunities for reasons beyond their control. It made me curious about why these inequalities exist and what can be done to change them. Those questions are what eventually led me to study sociology.

I am an overseas student from China and have been studying in the UK for the past 12 years. During my Master’s in Inequalities and Social Science at LSE, I focused on understanding how social and economic inequalities shape people’s life chances, especially in areas like education, health, employment, and social mobility.

After finishing my degree, I came across KORI and was really drawn to its mission. I really appreciate how the organisation supports young people in a holistic way — not only helping with education but also building confidence, wellbeing, and long-term aspirations. This connects closely with my academic interests in inequality and youth transitions, particularly the move into the labour market. The internship would be a great opportunity for me to see how ideas and research about inequality are turned into real programmes that support young people.

At KORI, I hope to support the team with research, monitoring and evaluation, and other activities that help strengthen the organisation’s impact. I’m especially interested in helping with data collection, impact reporting, and developing resources that capture young people’s experiences and outcomes. More generally, I’m excited to learn from the team and the young people KORI work with, while also bringing a thoughtful and analytical perspective to the organisation’s work.
