This Easter Holiday KORI, in partnership with Tutors United delivered S.T.E.A.M Ahead! A weeklong STEM and Arts Programme for young people in Years 5,6 and 7. This project aimed to grow young people’s engagement with STEM subjects over the holiday and support the transition between primary and secondary school.
Through the week young people explored the theme of ‘How humans and cities have adapted over time’, designing their own city through key areas such as Education, Commercial Centres, Housing, Transport and Green spaces. With input from civil engineering industry leader Mott Macdonald and enriching trips to the barbican. The young people developed their plans and gave group presentation to parents at the end of the week.
Alongside this Young people received bespoke wellbeing and creative sessions to explore how they will/ have already been adapting to their school transitions. These sessions focused peer mentorship developing social and emotional tools young people could use in their own contexts. An end of week trip to bowling allowed young people to have fun and further build on these new relationships.
This project beautifully demonstrated where academics and wellbeing can successfully blend to ensure rich learning for young people. It will act as a pilot for longer S.T.E.A.M Ahead programmes that we are developing for the future.
