Intern at House of Parliament

Sol Hancock joined KORI from Australia as an intern for 12 weeks at the end of last year. He came through ‘The Intern Group’ that has provided us with excellent young interns for the last six years. Sol’s aim was to develop his organisational and problem-solving skills, whilst learning about the third sector.

During his time with us he undertook many tasks which provided him with an insight to the many challenges facing marginalised young people from across North London that led to the formation and growth of KORI’s three programmes.

In Supervision Sol shared that as he applied himself to tasks he came to realise that the significance of grassroots work cannot be overlooked. ‘I realised the importance of assertive communication in the workplace, and not being too passive.’ He spoke to of how his mind slowly opened to the possibility of a career outside of policymaking.

KORI has a rich network, so Sol was able to also access a week at the Lord’s curtesy off Lord Griffiths. Whilst there he sat in on many different meetings, debates and discussions, some of the most notable being a book launch with the presence of Lord Neil Kinnock and Lord Michael Howard, former leaders of the Labour and Conservative Party and a meeting with a migration organisation who work primarily around policy advocacy.

‘I learnt more about picking the right time to interject in conversation, and that your voice matters just as much as the person next to you.’

He summarised his time at KORI as being “ thoroughly transformative, resulting in him growing as a person and gaining career clarity.’

We certainly valued his contribution to our policy development and research and enjoyed his personality. His future is bright!
